Hollywood Regency Style
Be inspired this autumn by the glamour and opulence of old Hollywood luxury.
The classic Hollywood Regency style made popular in the 1930s with its glamorous, sophisticated and ever so slightly over the top look is making a modern-day comeback.
With its origins rooted in the theatrics of movie set design during the golden age of film making, on film it provided an evocative backdrop for the stars of the screen. Hollywood’s elite fell in love with the chic look and Regency style quickly became a favourite of screen sirens like Joan Crawford, socialite Betsy Bloomingdale and first lady Nancy Reagan, who decorated their homes with overtones of glitz and glam.
Here are our top tips to help introduce some California glamour into your home this autumn.
Be dramatic
The key to creating your very own Hollywood Regency setting is the bold prints that you introduce. From animal prints to art deco and neo-classical motifs, to wide stripes and geometrics, don’t be afraid to be bold. Black and white harlequin flooring is a signature of this style’s Hollywood roots. It’s all about drama so be flamboyant with your pattern choices.
When picking your fabrics, choose thick, opulent materials that stand up to the grandeur of any Hollywood Regency room. Imagine velvet drapes and thick, sculpted carpets made of textiles that appear lush to the eye and to the touch. Frame your windows with curtains that allow for generous gathering and a broad sweep for an extra dramatic effect.
Add plush details
Crystal chandeliers, platinum photo frames, plush pillows and mirrored surfaces can add instant glamour to your space.
Glossy lacquered furniture is a staple of this trend alongside mirrored pieces like side tables and coffee tables to elevate your furnishings. Haines and Draper, who were stalwarts of the Hollywood Regency look, added glitzy chandeliers, faux fur accents, chintz and plaster mouldings into their client’s homes to create an elegant atmosphere for socialising at cocktail hour, as well as a luxurious space for Hollywood’s biggest stars to retreat to.
