1. Know What You Want And Why

Before you start looking for a bed, try and decide your priorities. For example, is it price, storage, access to the bedroom, turning the mattress, getting in and out of bed, overall size or shape or a health issue. This will help you narrow down your search and make it easier to compare different types.


2. Try Before You Buy

Always try a selection of beds for comparison before you buy. This will give you an idea of what’s for you and what’s not. The support and comfort you require needs to be correct for your weight and build – not just the firmness.

 

3. Make It As Close To The Real Thing As Possible

When trying beds for comfort, try to wear comfortable clothing and lie down in your normal sleeping position. Make sure you make some turns and ensure you have enough space.

 

4. Don’t Compromise On Size

A standard 4’6 double is only 2’3 if you are sleeping with a partner. That is less than a single bed! Measure the space you have and go for the largest bed possible.


5. Try With Your Partner

And don’t forget to try it together if it’s for two. Your partner’s weight, height and sleep position will impact on how comfy you both find the bed.


6. Consider The Base As Well As The Mattress

A mattress and base work together to create the comfort, so consider them together not in isolation. A mattress on a bed frame can feel very different to on a divan base.


7. Be Sure Of Your Dimensions

Always check the dimensions as not all bed sizes are standardised. European sizes are different and some manufacturers use these European sizes. See our size guide below.
