How to Choose the Perfect Bedroom Furniture

You’ve found your perfect bed and are ready for that blissful night’s sleep - maybe now’s a good time to update your bedroom furniture as well?

Do you find yourself inspired by your travels, whether in the UK or abroad and want to bring home the look and feel of your hotel to your home?

Our bedrooms can often be the easiest place to create a haven of comfort and space.

A well dressed Bed...

Your starting point is a well-dressed bed, with plump pillows, cushions and a co-ordinating throw, all adding up to create a great focal point round which to build the rest of the room.

Your choice of bedroom furniture is also key to helping create a sanctuary for sleep and restoration, offering both practical storage and functionality and contributing to the overall aesthetic of the room.

So where to start?

Think Practicality

What are your storage requirements?

How much space do you have to play with?

Do you need drawers under your bed?

An ottoman or bench seat?

Start with your Bed...

Ideally, start with your bed and choose a bedstead or headboard to set the tone for the rest of the room.

Nothing says luxury and designer style, more than an oversized upholstered headboard or bedstead. And if you’re looking for a new bed, we can offer plenty of options, with huge scope for a personalised look. You’ll find options for bedsteads in a wide range of fabrics, styles and with co-ordinating bases to headboards. An oversized buttoned headboard will perfectly set the scene for a boutique-hotel feel to your room. When you visit the showroom, bring any curtain swatches, as well as carpet samples and cushion fabrics and have a look through the fabric sample books to find the perfect complement to your bedroom scheme.

Definitely don’t rush the purchase of your bed and mattress, take a look at our Bed Buying Guide and Mattress Buying Guide, or visit one of our showrooms and let our expert team help you find the perfect bed.

Bedside Tables

Bedside tables are a great opportunity to support you in a good night’s sleep.

Ensure your bedside tables are visually in proportion to your bed. Always scale up if you can, the bigger, the better!

Add a matching pair of lamps or wall lights, if you have the room 'go big' with these to create a dramatic look!

Think about space for the things you need at night, a drink and your favourite book or kindle, these all need space to provide you with easy access to them during the night.

Complete the look...

Other items of furniture you may want to include are -
chests of drawers, tallboys, dressing tables, an occasional chair or pair of chairs with side table - beautiful in a window. Perhaps even a TV cabinet so you can conceal your TV behind doors when you’re not watching it.

Fitted Look or Freestanding?

So, the next question is whether to opt for built-in look or free-standing furniture.
Advantages of built-in looking furniture is you get to choose the exact configuration for your drawers, cupboards, wardrobes and hanging space.
Take a look at our How To Buy The Perfect Wardrobe Guide for more information on selecting the right wardrobe for your bedroom.

Fitted Look Furniture

Fitted look furniture can fit in awkward spaces and adapt to different room sizes. At Cookes we offer fitted look furniture from a selection of Manufacturers. You can get a built-in furniture look, with bespoke configurations, including different finishes and size options of width and internal fitments, telescopic rails, internal drawer storage and clever illuminated sections.

Freestanding Furniture

Freestanding furniture gives you more options to create a characterful room. Rather than going for matching fitted furniture, you can mix and match styles and finishes so that your bedsides or chest of drawers contrast or complement your other bedroom furniture.

It’s increasingly common now to mix and match your furniture, in a similar way to how we don’t always have a matching three piece suite in our living room. So, feel free to have bedside tables in one colour or finish, and your wardrobe and dressing table in something different.

Avoid too many wood finishes however, as these can clash with each other. Small items of furniture such as side tables, ottomans and chairs can accessorise your room, so add a designer lacquered or metallic finish to add some wow factor to your bedroom.

Luxury Bedroom Furniture

You can combine and contrast a variety of finishes to create a unique, luxurious feel to your bedroom.
